Depoimento do Artista

Artist Statement

My studio practice centers landscape painting, and focuses on scenes from Brazil and from my hometown of Rio de Janeiro. My subjects are specific details from my life in Brazil, taken from plein-air sketches and personal photographs. I often feature nuanced textures, such bodies of water and deep foliage.

My work investigates the trope of the landscape painting as a window (something transparent takes a viewer from inside to outside). Speaking to this theme, I tend to paint in translucent glazes, using acrylic paint and gel mediums in overlapping layers. I create different textures through an array of additive marks, done with brushes and pastels, and subtractive marks, done with wood-carving tools and rags. These techniques leave a layered history of process and time on each work.

By emphasizing touch and process in these ways, I aim to explore tension between the painting as an object and the painting as a crafted illusion. Through this dynamic, the artworks shorten distances, resisting the convention of the subject as an 'outside' (physically or culturally). All in all, my practice involves a lot of negotiation, searching for a balance between the glimmer of illusions and the sincerity of lived experiences.
